AFSTUDEERPROJECT public space vs public domain the post-war city public interior spaces The urban space defined by three volumes is actually the roof of a building. 4 meters under street level the sports world opens up and through a playful set of perforations and indirect links between upper en lower level, between interior and exterior public space, these two environments communicate through light, form and material. Different games take place next to and on top of each other: collective and individual sports, organised and unorganised sports, community and street sports. Next to sports, the public theatre unfolds and seeing and being seen becomes another activity.

3 AN URBAN PLAYGROUND 2005 Calandplein, Amsterdam Master Interior Studio Pimlott / Zeinstra The post-war urban extension of Amsterdam West was designed with strong ideals about public life and communal activity. These ideals were given form a series of public squares was laid out in this post-war city extension. They were originally designed as public condensation points and symbols of social equality, but have now lost their role as social and economic centers: they function as oversized transit spaces, Different communities have found their own place for social interaction, in separate and secluded - sometimes even hidden - interior public spaces. This thesis project proposes to rethink and redesign one of the squares in Amsterdam West, the Calandplein, by confronting and synthesizing the square with a public interior, a sports building.

4 AN URBAN PLAYGROUND 2005 Calandplein, Amsterdam Master Interior Studio Pimlott / Zeinstra The building, housing several sport spaces and public functions, is placed below street level and shapes the square above. A folding deck is introduced as interface between interior and exterior. Communication between both worlds is established by form, perforations and openings. Through this juxtaposition the public becomes an audience for the actors performing their play of sports. From within the building, the city becomes the scene against which its activity is played out. The sport hall, the largest space within the ensemble, plays a key role within the link between building and exterior. It can be opened up, creating a generous covered space, allowing a variety of public events to take place. Building and square are a continuous public space connecting street, hall and square. This playful dialogue between interior and exterior questions the boundaries of public space, turning it into a landscape for public life.

Boundaries between the unorganised public space and the controlled public domain fade in a synergy of space and activity. The unknowing public turns into the audience of a spectacle.
