1 Information for parents on vaccination against Rotavirus Inenten tegen het Rotavirus Your hospital has recently started offering rotavirus vaccinations to extra vulnerable children to protect them against the consequences of an intestinal infection with the rotavirus. This brochure offers information on the rotavirus vaccination and on groups of children who, within the RIVAR-project, are eligible for this vaccination. In het wordt sinds kort rotavirusvaccinatie aangeboden aan verhoogd kwetsbare kinderen om hen te beschermen tegen de gevolgen van een darminfectie met het rotavirus. In deze folder kunt u informatie vinden over de rotavirusvaccinatie en over groepen kinderen die binnen het RIVAR-project in aanmerking komen voor deze vaccinatie.

2 What is a rotavirus infection? A rotavirus infection is the most common cause of stomach and intestinal infections in babies and toddlers. This infection may cause serious diarrhoea, vomiting and fever, with a great risk of dehydration. A hospital admission is regularly required for this. Wat is een rotavirusinfectie? Een rotavirusinfectie is de meest voorkomende oorzaak van maag- en darminfecties bij baby s en peuters. Deze infectie kan ernstige diarree, braken en koorts veroorzaken, met een grote kans op uitdroging. Regelmatig is hiervoor een ziekenhuisopname nodig. Vaccination protects Vaccination against the rotavirus offers babies and toddlers protection against the consequences of a rotavirus infection. The rotavirus vaccination is very effective in preventing serious diarrhoea, dehydration and hospital admission. Vaccinatie beschermt Vaccinatie tegen het rotavirus biedt baby s en peuters bescherming tegen de gevolgen van een rotavirusinfectie. Rotavirusvaccinatie is zeer effectief in het voorkómen van ernstige diarree, uitdroging en ziekenhuisopname. Extra vulnerable children Examination showed that a rotavirus infection creates more problems for certain vulnerable babies and toddlers. It concerns premature children with a birth weight that was too low, or who have a genetic disorder of, for example, the heart, nerve system or intestines. These children end up more often in the hospital with a rotavirus infection or suffer from it for a longer period of time. In rare cases, even serious complications occur. These children, in particular, may therefore greatly benefit from the vaccination against rotavirus. Verhoogd kwetsbare kinderen Uit onderzoek is gebleken dat een infectie met het rotavirus bij bepaalde kwetsbare baby s en peuters meer problemen geeft. Het gaat om kinderen die te vroeg geboren zijn, een te laag geboortegewicht hadden, of een aangeboren aandoening van bijvoorbeeld hart, zenuwstelsel of darmen hebben. Deze kinderen komen vaker in het ziekenhuis terecht met een rotavirusinfectie of hebben er langer last van. In een enkel geval treden zelfs ernstige complicaties op. Vooral deze kinderen kunnen daarom veel baat hebben bij vaccinatie tegen rotavirus. How has rotavirus vaccination been regulated in the Netherlands? Vaccinating against rotavirus is allowed in the Netherlands, but is not part of the Government Vaccination Programme. Therefore, your well-baby clinic does not have the vaccine. In many other countries, for example Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom, babies do get standard vaccinations against rotavirus. You can request the rotavirus vaccination for your baby on your own initiative, for example via your GP. Your pharmacy does not normally have the vaccine in stock and will have to order it. You need to pay for it yourself as the insurance does not offer reimbursement. Hoe is rotavirusvaccinatie in Nederland geregeld? Vaccineren tegen rotavirus is in Nederland wel toegestaan, maar is geen onderdeel van het Rijks Vaccinatie Programma. Uw consultatiebureau heeft het vaccin daarom niet beschikbaar. 3 In veel andere landen, bijvoorbeeld in België, Duitsland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk worden baby s wel standaard tegen rotavirus gevaccineerd. Het is mogelijk om op eigen initiatief rotavirusvaccinatie voor uw baby aan te vragen via bijvoorbeeld de huisarts. Uw apotheek heeft het vaccin niet standaard op voorraad en zal het moeten bestellen. U moet hier dan zelf voor betalen, de verzekering biedt geen vergoeding. The RIVAR -project In the RIVAR-project, rotavirus vaccination is available for free for extra vulnerable children who are being treated by a medical specialist. The hospital where your child is being treated is participating in the RIVAR-project. The paediatrician or attending physician determines if your child is eligible for the rotavirus vaccination within the RIVAR-project and provides the necessary advice. However, vaccination is never compulsory. Het RIVAR-project In het RIVAR-project is rotavirusvaccinatie kosteloos beschikbaar voor verhoogd kwetsbare kinderen, die onder behandeling zijn van een medisch specialist. Het ziekenhuis waar uw kindje onder behandeling is, doet mee aan het RIVAR-project. De (kinder)arts bepaalt of uw kindje in aanmerking komt voor rotavirusvaccinatie binnen het RIVAR-project en adviseert hierover. Vaccinatie is echter nooit verplicht. An oral vaccine given twice The vaccination against rotavirus consists of an oral vaccine that is administered twice. Therefore, your child is not vaccinated with a syringe. The vaccine is administered by dripping 1,5 ml of vaccine liquid into the child's mouth. The vaccine has a sweet taste. The vaccine is called Rotarix. Twee keer een drinkvaccin De vaccinatie tegen rotavirus bestaat uit een drinkvaccin dat tweemaal wordt toegediend. Uw kind krijgt dus geen prik voor deze vaccinatie. Het vaccin wordt toegediend door 1.5 ml vaccinvloeistof in de mond te druppelen. Het vaccin heeft een zoete smaak. De naam van het vaccin is Rotarix. When does your child get the oral vaccine? The rotavirus vaccine has only been developed for administration to babies. The first dose can be administered from an age of 6 weeks onwards, and no later than 14 weeks after the birth. The second dose is, preferably, given before the baby is 16 weeks old, but no later than before 24 weeks. A period of at least 4 weeks is required between the first and second dose. When you decide, together with your child's attending physician, to vaccinate against rotavirus, the first dose will be administered by the physician or nurse, for example during an appointment to the outpatient clinic. In consultation with the attending physician, you can administer the second dose yourself at home. You will be given relevant instructions. Wanneer krijgt uw kind het drinkvaccin? Het rotavirusvaccin is alleen ontwikkeld voor toediening aan baby s. De eerste dosis kan vanaf een leeftijd van 6 weken worden toegediend, en niet later dan 14 weken na de geboorte. De tweede dosis wordt bij voorkeur vóór de leeftijd van 16 weken oud gegeven, maar uiterlijk vóór de 24 weken. Tussen de eerste en tweede doses moet een periode van minimaal 4 weken zitten. 4 Wanneer u samen met de behandelend arts van uw kind besluit tot vaccinatie tegen rotavirus zal de eerste dosis worden toegediend door de arts of verpleegkundige, bijvoorbeeld tijdens een polikliniekbezoek. De tweede dosis kunt u, in overleg met de behandelend arts, zelf thuis toedienen. U krijgt hiervoor dan instructies mee. How does the rotavirus vaccine work? The rotavirus vaccine consists of a live, but very attenuated rotavirus. This does not make your child ill, but does imitate the rotavirus infection. The child's body responds by producing antibodies. Your child will then in future be protected against serious stomach flu due to the rotavirus. The reason is that the body recognizes the virus and takes immediate action. Hoe werkt het rotavirusvaccin? Het rotavirusvaccin bestaat uit een levend, maar zeer verzwakt rotavirus. Dat maakt uw kind niet ziek, maar bootst wel de rotavirusinfectie na. Het kinderlichaam reageert daarop door antistoffen te maken. Uw kind zal dan in de toekomst beschermd zijn tegen ernstige buikgriep door het rotavirus. Dat komt doordat het lichaam het virus herkent en meteen in actie komt. Are then any adverse reactions? As with any medication or vaccine, your child may suffer from adverse reactions. However, not every child will experience them. About 1 in 10 children will be affected by diarrhoea and/or irritation. For 1 in 100 children, symptoms of belly ache and/or flatulence and inflammation of the skin were reported. Very rare adverse reactions that were reported: Invagination (a part of the intestine becomes blocked or twisted). You can recognize this by serious belly ache, continuous vomiting, blood in the stools, a bloated belly and/or high fever. Blood in the stools. In very premature babies (<28 weeks of pregnancy) respiratory problems may occur (longer pauses between the breaths than normal) during two to three days after the vaccination. Zijn er bijwerkingen? Zoals bij elk geneesmiddel of vaccin kan uw kind ook last krijgen van bijwerkingen. Al krijgt lang niet elk kind daarmee te maken. Ongeveer 1 op de 10 kinderen krijgt last van diarree en/of geïrriteerdheid. Bij 1 op de 100 kinderen zijn klachten van buikpijn en/of winderigheid en ontsteking van de huid gemeld. Zeer zeldzame bijwerkingen die gemeld zijn: Invaginatie (een deel van de darmen raakt geblokkeerd of verdraaid). Dit kunt u herkennen aan ernstige buikpijn, voortdurend overgeven, bloed in de ontlasting, een opgezwollen buik en/of hoge koorts. Bloed bij de ontlasting. Bij zeer vroeg geboren baby s (<28 weken zwangerschapsduur) kunnen zich ademhalingsproblemen voordoen (langere pauzes tussen de ademteugen dan normaal) gedurende twee tot drie dagen na de vaccinatie. What can you do? Is your baby having an adverse reaction to the vaccination? Report this at the next visit to your child's attending physician or nurse. 5 Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre. There, the adverse reactions are registered and more closely examined. You can also make a report yourself at Sometimes, Lareb will contact you if they want more information on an adverse reaction. Wat kunt u doen? Heeft uw baby een bijwerking na de vaccinatie? Meld dit dan bij het volgende bezoek aan de behandelend arts of verpleegkundige van uw kind. De arts of verpleegkundige meldt de bijwerking bij Lareb, het onafhankelijke Nederlands Bijwerkingen Centrum. De bijwerkingen worden daar geregistreerd en nader onderzocht. U kunt ook zelf een melding doen op Soms neemt Lareb contact met u op, als ze meer informatie willen over een bijwerking.
