3 Definition of One Health as used by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Utrecht University. One Health deals with the health and well-being of humans and animals, on a national and international level through the prevention of infectious and noninfectious diseases related to the cohabitation of animals and humans and taking into account environmental, social, ecological and economical (in particular cost benefit) aspects. It is defined as the integrative effort of multiple disciplines working locally, nationally, and globally to attain optimal health for people, animals, and the environment. One Health has a distinctly different emphasis in comparison to One Medicine. One Medicine aims at diagnosing and treating disease with the animal as model for humans and vice versa. General information track One Health Composition of TOC: Prof Dr. J.A. Wagenaar, Prof Dr. J.A. Stegeman, Drs. W.G.G.M. van der Maazen, Prof Dr. Ir. D. Heederik and Dr. L.J.A. Lipman (chair) Relationship with the curriculum: The MSc Veterinary Medicine Track One Health will allow Veterinary BSc graduates to become a veterinarian with extensive knowledge on One Health principles and goals. A maximum of 25 students will be admitted annually. The Track One Health consist of 20 weeks of courses on specific topics combined with an internship of 19 weeks (track equine: 17 weeks). During this internship the student will work for 12 weeks on a research project. Aims: Veterinarians who have completed the Track One Health within one of the animal specific tracks (major) are equipped with knowledge and skills which make them preeminently fit to function in the sector of veterinary medicine where the interplay between animals, their owners, society, the environment and the economy is leading. She/he can verify, analyze and communicate on the interdependency of animal and human health, the environment and the ecology, in a national and international perspective taking into account economic aspects like cost benefits. This can be done on a policy level working in civil service, as a researcher involved in veterinary or human related research or as a practitioner in Companion Animals, Equine or Farm Animals. Potential employers, next to veterinary practices, can be on a national level: municipal and provincial health services and boards, industries, ministries, animal protection organizations and public health research organizations e.g. RIVM, WUR, UU or at an international level e.g. World Health Organization, FAO, OIE, EFSA, ECDC. In this track specific attention will be given to health aspects of humans and animals nationally and internationally through the prevention of infectious and noninfectious diseases related to the cohabitation of animals and humans taking into account environmental, social, ecological and economical aspects. Veterinarians graduated as Master of Science in Veterinary Medicine who attended this track should be able to perform a risk evaluation on animal related risks for humans and know how to manage and communicate such risks. 3

4 Program outcomes/logistics The Track One Health will consist of a course based education period of 20 weeks and an internship of weeks (depending on master differentiation see OER/education program Master Veterinary medicine 45/faculteit/diergeneeskunde-23#main-content). Topics addressed are risk assessment, risk management and risk communication. Within these topics specific subtopics are addressed (see below). Risk assessment Hazards: Microbiology and infectious diseases (including antimicrobial resistance and molecular epidemiology) Chemical agents, residues and toxicology Public health and epidemiology ( including environmental and occupational health) One Health ecology Emerging diseases (zoonosis) Exposure and Risks: Surveillance and outbreak investigation Population dynamics of (infectious) diseases including epidemiology and statistics Risk management Intervention strategies for infectious diseases including early warning systems Outbreak management and disaster control Policy making, (inter)national non-governmental and governmental organizations and legislation related to One Health Public health and food safety control Risk communication Communication strategies Ethics related to One Health One Health economics Leadership 4

5 Course based education program (20 weeks): The course based education period will be divided in a compulsory core program (10 weeks) and an elective program (10 weeks). Courses will be identified by the TOC. The core program are interdisciplinary courses within the University Utrecht to emphasize the multi-disciplinary side of One Health. A student should provide the TOC an individual education program consisting of the compulsory core program, an elective course program and an internship based program. These programs will be reviewed by the TOC and must be approved by the TOC. Compulsory core program (can be changed by the TOC): Week 1: Introduction to Epidemiology by IRAS Week 2: Introduction to One Health Thesis presentations of students of previous year Epidemiology and infectious diseases by Departments Large Animal Health and IRAS Week 3 and 4 Microbiology and infectious diseases (including antimicrobial resistance and molecular epidemiology), emerging diseases (zoonosis) by Department Infection and Immunology Week 5 and 6 Risk Assessment and risk management of infectious agents by IRAS Week 7 and 8 Exposure assessment in epidemiology by IRAS Week 9 and 10 One Health and environment by IRAS Internship based program (17-19 weeks): The internship should fit within the total individual student s education plan. In the internship period students should perform a research assignment of at least 12 weeks. International internships are encouraged. In the remaining weeks of the internship period, One Health subjects related to the internship e.g. disaster preparedness and actions, food quality assurance systems will be studied by the students. Subjects and education goals to be met, for this period should be provided by the students in the individual education program (see above). A list of selected preferred partners for internships will be provided by the TOC. Every preferred partner will have a contact person at the Veterinary Faculty in Utrecht. Specific selection criteria for specific internships can exist. If the latter is the case, selection procedures for application will be provided. The contact person will assess the applications and decide which student can do the internship (if any). 5

6 Assessment Courses will be concluded with an exam as described in the specific course guidelines. Results of these examinations will be gathered in the e-portfolio. During the master, students have to write a track master thesis. This track master thesis will include the master thesis (on the internship). Assessment of the track master thesis will be done using the existing system for the assignment for the master thesis Students will be given personal feedback on their individual education program consisting of 1) the compulsory core program, 2) an elective course program and 3) an internship based program by a mentor, to be appointed by the TOC. Final grading of the track will consist of an average of the grades from the internships, the core education period and the individual education program. Text of exam program Track One Health Elke student doorloopt een specifiek op hem/haar toegesneden programma bestaande uit één of meer cursussen, stages, onderzoeksprojecten en/of andere activiteiten. Daarnaast schrijft de student een master thesis over een One Health onderwerp. Het programma wordt vooraf door de MOC One Health goedgekeurd, zodat er een maximale garantie is dat een voldoende leereffect kan worden bereikt. Elke student heeft een persoonlijk begeleider vanuit de MOC One Health. Elk onderdeel dient met een voldoende resultaat te zijnafgesloten. Voor de track One Health geldt dat de onderzoeksstage en de vrije keuzeruimte/keuzecursussen deel uitmaken van het programma en dus (vooraf) in overleg met de trackcoördinator moeten worden afgestemd. Eindcijfer De organisaties waar de activiteiten plaatsvinden, zullen de door de studenten opgeleverde onderzoeks of projectresultaten beoordelen en deze beoordelingen vervolgens ter hand stellen aan de begeleider vanuit de MOC One Health. Dit gebeurt bij voorkeur met een daartoe bestemd formulier, gebaseerd op de zeven competentiedomeinen uit het e-portfolio (zie Studiewijzer). De verplichte en gekozen cursussen worden afgesloten binnen en via de in de cursus gekozen systematiek en de beoordeling wordt doorgegeven aan de begeleider. De thesis wordt door de MOC One Health beoordeeld. Uiteindelijk heeft de student een eindgesprek met de begeleider vanuit de MOC plus een extra MOC lid, waar de student alle resultaten dient te over leggen. In dat gesprek wordt het definitieve eindcijfer bepaald gebaseerd op een gewogen gemiddelde van de verschillende onderdelen van de track. Het belang van de verschillende onderdelen wordt weerspiegeld in de duur van de onderdelen. NB Voor studenten met een niet-klinische track is er geen tweede beoordeling van e-portfolioresultaten door de commissie beoordeling portfolio master Diergeneeskunde. E-portfolio Indien de student haar/zijn masterprogramma start met deze track, dient zij/hij aan het begin van de track een eerste (verplichte) POP te schrijven. Indien de student haar/zijn masterprogramma afsluit met deze track, dient zij/hij aan het eind van de track een EINDPOP te schrijven. Dit POP is gekoppeld aan het zesde en tevens laatste tutorgesprek.52 Het gespreksverslag van het zesde tutorgesprek moet wel worden opgenomen in het e-portfolio.53 Meer informatie over de track One Health is te vinden in de studiewijzer op Blackboard. 6
